2008 Annual Self-Governance Conference


04/28/08 - RIVIERA HOTEL & CASINO, LAS VEGAS, NV -
The California Valley Miwok Tribe attended the 2008 Annual Self-Governance Conference held on April 27th through May 1st, 2008, at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. In attendance representing the Tribe were Silvia Burley, Chairperson, Anjelica Paulk, Vice Chairperson and the Tribe's attorneys. The Tribe is seeking to become a self-governance tribe, having maintained an admirable 9 year history of perfect annual audits under the leadership of Chairperson Silvia Burley and the current Tribal Council.

The Tribe would especially like to thank the following persons for educating its representatives on all aspects of the requirements and services under the self-governance program; W. Ron Allen, Chairman of the DOI Self-Governance Advisory Committee, Matthew Johnson, J.D., Policy Analyst, IHS Self--Governance, Sharee M. Freeman, Director of Self-Governance, DOI, Ken Renfield, Senior Policy Program Analyst, Self-Governance, DOI and Don Kashevaroff, President of the Seldovia Village Tribe and Chairman of the IHS Tribal Self-Governance Advisory Committee.

04/10/08 - CVMT TRIBAL OFFICE, STOCKTON, CA -
To all friends of the Tribe and others that have voiced concern, thank you for the support we have received concerning our previous medical hardships. Now that our health conditions have been addressed, we are revitalized and stronger than ever. We have again been able to send representatives to functions whose importance merits inclusion on our website. Below are just a few of the functions we were able to attend. Northeastern California Tribal NAGPRA Coalition Meeting


04/04/08 - RENO-SPARKS INDIAN COLONY, RENO, NV -
The California Valley Miwok Tribe was honored to be invited to the Northeastern California Tribal NAGPRA Coalition (NECATNC) meeting held on April 4th, 2008, at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony in Reno, Nevada. The Tribe currently is an active member of the Sierra Nevada NAGPRA Coalition (SNNC) and is proud to work with any coalitions of NAGPRA to preserve sacred sites, tribal lands, retrieve all cultural items lost throughout history and to repatriate the remains of our ancestors whom came before us so that they may finally rest.

The main topics addressed were the need for more regulation concerning Off-Highway Vehicles and securing the protection of sacred sites, lands open to the public and the environment from the impact of irresponsible OHV use by working through the legislative process. Bi-Annual Inter-Tribal Council of California General Council Meeting


04/03/08 - ROBINSON RANCHERIA RESORT & CASINO, NICE, CA -
The Inter-Tribal Council of California (ITCC) is an organization with Native American tribes and tribal organizations from throughout California. It was established in 1963 to help meet the needs and address future concerns that affect our tribal communites. The California Valley Miwok Tribe is an active member and was able to attend the conference held at the Robinson Resort & Casino on April 3rd and 4th, 2008. With information and solutions being discussed on subjects ranging from protecting sacred sites and health issues to helping families in crisis.
